Conversion of Saint Paul

"They only were hearing it said, 'He who used to persecute us is now persecuting the faith he once tried to destroy.' And they glorified God because of me." (Gal. 1:23-24)

Psalm 67
Acts 26:9-21
Galatians 1:11-24
Matthew 10:16-22

A couple beautiful things worth noting:

  • The readings for today do not include the obvious pericope, from Acts 9, when Paul is actually converted.  The Daily Office goes straight for why it matters that Paul was converted.
  • I had never noticed how direct Paul is in Acts 26.  There Paul is, both defendant and cheap entertainment before the governor Festus and King Agrippa and surely a large court as well.  Festus interrupts Paul’s story, tells Paul loudly that he’s crazy.  Paul responds by sidestepping Felix altogether and then going for broke, calling King Agrippa to make a decision about the facts before him: “You know I’m telling the truth, Agrippa.  You’ve seen what I’m talking about.”  I wish the book of Acts was more interested in providing atmospherics, because I can imagine an audible gasp from the audience at the defiant question and a hard-beating heart for Agrippa as he forced out a terse answer, defensive and deflecting Paul’s question away with another question.  Then Agrippa just leaves the room altogether.  Is he running from something?  I hope with Paul that it caught up with him one day.

Collect for the Day
O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the world: Grant, we pray, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show ourselves thankful to you by following his holy teaching; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
