This August, members of ASC were joined by volunteers from the other Oak Creek Village Partnership churches in planing and hosting a Summer Kids Club at Oak Creek Village. The kids club ran from Monday through Friday and culminated in a community celebration. Each day kids and families spent two hours playing games, doing crafts, singing, listening to a Jesus story and learning about Jesus through object lessons. Each aspect of the afternoon was carefully crafted to implicitly or explicitly share about Jesus. Martha Vetter was our story-teller and she engaged children and parents alike as she shared 4 miracle stories from the life and ministry of Jesus.
The week was a tremendous success. This was the second year that we have planned and hosted this event in the Oak Creek Village neighborhood directly behind our church building and this was evidenced by the large number of families that attended. Each day we had over 70 kids and on Friday at the community celebration over 200 people came. I am so thankful for the dozens of faithful volunteers from ASC and our partner churches. They were awesome!
At the community celebration we had a 40 foot water slide, a bouncy house, a clown, games, cotton candy, popcorn, popsicles, Latin music, door prizes, a portable stage and a gospel presentation. This was a truly joyful event for the community!
The greatest joy for me was watching the volunteers interact with the families of Oak Creek and seeing so many familiar faces. Many of the children that attended are Eagles’ Nest (our after school program) students and also many attended last year and were excited to be back. I am thankful for this opportunity for our church to partner with other neighborhood churches to proclaim the gospel in word and deed. I was struck this summer by the reality that we are not bringing Jesus to the people of Oak Creek Village – He is already there. In a very real way we are meeting Jesus in the people of Oak Creek as we interact with them, love them and meet their real and tangible needs.
May the Spirit give us wisdom to know how to continue loving our neighbors and eyes to see Jesus in those that we love and serve.
To God be the Glory!

Fun Fact: We gave away 1600 popsicles in 5 days at the Summer Kids Club. That’s a lot of high fructose corn syrup!
